Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
Homemade ice cream is yours with only 5 basic ingredients (eggs are not required.) This tried and true mint chocolate chip ice cream is just as good, if not better than any other.
So, I hear it’s ice cream week. In honor of this
important week, I created my family's favorite flavor: Mint Chocolate Chip Ice
Cream.
Fun fact: Mint chip ice
cream is sometimes called peppermint bone. I didn't realize it until I stepped
out the window of an ice cream parlor several years ago and asked to see what
the peppermint bone tasted like.
No matter what you call it, it's
definitely delicious. This is one of the flavors that fade quickly in stores, but you won't have to worry about it because
you have this creamy, smooth mint chip ice cream recipe to have. is ready.
It’s easy to make at home, even if you have never made ice cream before!
Mint
Chocolate Chip Ice Cream uses a traditional custard base for fresh, everyday ingredients like real mint, milk, cream, semi-sweet or dark chocolate, and rich and creamy
dessert.
Why do we use fresh mint?
Two pieces of mint are growing in our yard,
although I never thought we would use mint for ice cream. The taste of this
recipe using fresh mint is really out of this world, so if you can get your
hands on fresh mint, I highly recommend using it for this ice cream.
Best Types of Mint and Mint Extract
There are over 600
varieties of mint. Many varieties offer their own unique flavors. For example,
asparagus tastes relatively mild while peppermint is more intense. The fresh
mint sold in the grocery stores is spice, but you can use peppermint in this
recipe. In fact, many mint ice creams are made from peppermint instead of
spearmint. Just keep in mind that since peppermint contains a lot of menthols,
you may want to use it a little less.
If you do not have fresh mint, you can use
a liqueur as an alternative. Peppermint extract is actually a combination of
both spearmint and peppermint, while peppermint extract is made from peppermint
only.
WHAT we’LL NEED FOR ICE CREAM?
Her favorite frozen treat is as good a homemade treat as you would be in line to buy one. Maybe even a little better, because you can add as many mint ingredients and chocolate bits as you like.
Grab these 5
ingredients and let it go:
- Whole milk: The colder, the better. Use whole milk for creamy results.
- Sugar: I don't like anything, just plain old cinnamon.
- Heavy Cream: Again, the colder the better.
- Pure Peppermint
Extract: Feel free to use another liqueur
like vanilla if you wish.
- Semi-sweet chocolate bar, chopped into bits (you'll need 4oz bars, or you can use chopped
chocolate chips.)
I know there are versions of homemade ice
cream that ice cream makers don't use, but I haven't tried any of these methods
and have heard mixed reviews about most of them.
- Ice Cream Maker: I have had Cuisinart on a budget for
years and we use it every spring/summer. Note: This is currently going in and
out of stock on Amazon because everyone wants to make their own ice cream, but
any reputable brand should work fine. Other stores like Target can also take
it.
The average ice cream maker receives
approximately 1.5 quarts, equivalent to a store-branded tub. My handmade dandy
ice cream maker has definitely paid more for himself.
HOMEMADE ICE CREAM
TIP
Yes, one tip. Just try, really try, give
the ice cream a few hours to freeze in the freezer before digging.
The texture should be creamy but softer
than the ice cream maker, so you'll want to transfer all of this flavor to a
frozen container (I use a loaf pan) and cover tightly with a lid or wrap. Of
course, some of us don't mind testing the slightly melted ice cream before
freezing the rest.
MINT
CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE CREAM
This is a great mint chocolate chip ice cream that I
accidentally discovered. I think 2% milk makes ice cream taste 'lighter'.
Prep Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes Yield: 10
Ingredients:
- 1 cup whole milk, cooled well.
- 3/4 cup granulated cinnamon
- 2 cups heavy cream, well cooled.
- 1.5-2 drops of pure peppermint, or to taste
- 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate bar, cut into small pieces
- Special equipment: ice cream maker
Instructions:
- In a bowl, use light to combine milk and sugar until dissolved. Stir in heavy cream and peppermint. Turn on the ice cream maker and add the mixture and let it simmer for about 25 minutes.
- During the last 5 minutes of fermenting, slowly add in the chopped chocolate. Transfer the ice cream to an airtight container for at least 2-3 hours before enjoying (if you can wait that long).
Note:
- Purely false, I have added a few drops of green food coloring to my mix. The color of the food is completely optional, and I go without it. The taste of mint chip is exactly the same without color.
- Feel free to play with the flavor options: for example, use vanilla extract instead of peppermint for regular chocolate chip ice cream.
If you liked this version, please come back and rate it.
